Statement: LGBTQ+ Youth in Care stands in solidarity with trans people

Trans people are a vital and essential part of our inclusive community and we will act to protect human rights against the injustices that trans people are currently facing at the hands of this government.

LGBTQ+ Youth in Care opposes ‘conversion therapy’ in all forms. We are committed to celebrating the sexual orientation, identities and cultures of all young people in care and in wider society.

The failure of the current government to include trans people within the proposed ban on conversion therapy is both harmful and highly offensive to the trans community.

We stand with other LGBTQ+ organisations in opposing the government proposal to not include trans people in the ban and we stand in support of our trans membership and as allies to the trans community.

Care experienced and cared for young people deserve the protection of the state and wider society in protecting them from harm and in ensuring that their individual identity is protected and promoted. The reasons young people are in care are often complex and this factor means that they are subject to greater vulnerabilities than many members of wider society. The failure of the government to legislate to protect all trans people from abusive conversion therapy creates further risk for trans young people in care who are too often denied the rights of decision making and self determination of the general population.

We will not engage in the government's attempt to create division in the LGBTQ+ community and we stand united with all other organisations and charities that oppose the current proposal.

We want trans members of our community to know LGBTQ+ Youth in Care stands with you as an ally and celebrates all the wonderful things each of you brings to our society.
